It began as an idea... "I could run the NY Marathon!"
On Sunday 3rd November 2019, that idea will be a reality!!!
Let me tell you the story of how that idea has become reality…..
Back in 2011 I had a really bad year, an “annus horribilis” as the Queen once famously and descriptively described her bad year. I had moved back to SA, I was newly single after my long term relationship broke down, my best friend was dying from a brain tumour , I didn’t have a job, I was living off my shrinking savings and I had no-where to live. But hell, I had plenty of time to think about things! So I wrote lists and goals, how things were going to change around but I also took the time to write a bucket list because I needed fun times ahead to look forward to. Visiting New York was on that bucket list and the NY marathon is one of those iconic things I think of when I think of New York, and because it was just a list… why not throw that idea on the list!
That’s where the ideas stayed; on the list until October 2018 last year. Sadly I had a niggling back problem checked out by a new chiro and ended up in extreme pain, having to find yet another new chiro to fix me! As I layabout on the couch, I had plenty of thinking time. One of the things I thought about was the New York marathon idea; identifying what were my fears, what was stopping me from doing it? Whilst laying on the couch listening to the radio, a story came on about Mark Soderstrom from radio station 102.3 running the 2018 NY marathon with a group called Adventure Time Travel. Suddenly I was all ears! …what did Adventure Time Travel take care of? Only ALL the things I was worried about! No excuses now… I immediately signed up for the 2019 NY marathon!
Looking back to my dark times I always knew life would get better; because I have a great life, life skills to be able to shape my life and the advantage of growing up with warm, loving, supportive family and friends. My children have also been fortunate but I know I would have fought tooth and nail for them to have what they needed and wanted if that had not been so. Every child deserves to have a great life but children in disadvantaged communities don’t always have that or get the support they need. So this year as part of the Adventure Time Travel New York Marathon team, we have chosen to give back and proudly support .......................The Roger Rasheed Sports Foundation charity.
The Roger Rasheed Sports Foundation aims to develop better, healthier children and communities and to connect and engage with vulnerable and disadvantaged children through sports. All monies raised go toward building facilities, providing equipment, training and pathways and mentoring programs.
Founder Roger Rasheed says it best, “I have seen first-hand the difference sport can make to children – to their lives now and in their future. And that is what this Foundation is all about – giving these kids access to a better life by giving them access to sport.”
My goal is to raise $3000 for the Roger Rasheed Sports Foundation.
If you can kindly donate $10; equal to the cost of a glass of wine, a beer or a couple of coffees, you can make a difference to disadvantaged and vulnerable children’s lives. It’s not a waste of time; yes individually it’s not a lot, the beauty of giving is that between us we can build and do something big and worthwhile! From little things big things grow!
Donations can be made via my fundraising page at any time and I will keep you posted on where and when fundraising events are happening in support of the Roger Rasheed Sports Foundation.
Remember, every child deserves to have a great life!
