I was such a brat in my early years of high school. Studies weren't my priority, I was just there to have fun with the other 'bad boys' and that got me into a lot of trouble to a point that I was so close to being expelled at the age of 14!! (I know you just can't picture that image of me right now, but yeah, I was no angel)
At that time, one of my good friends got into tennis and I was just waiting around for him to finish his training at the court so we can play video games afterward. The coach saw me looking all bored and bothered, he reached into his huge tennis bag and picked out a racquet out of his precious collection and handed it to me.
He said: "Join IN! Let's see how well can you hit! "
I didn't hesitate to grab the racquet and just ran and positioned myself next to my friend like a Spartan that's about to go to war!
The coach passed a tennis ball to me and WHAAAMMMM!!!! I smacked that so HARD it flew so high up! Although it was such a horrible hit, but I felt AWESOME!
"ONE MORE!!" I said .............& the rest is history.
Sports can actually teach us all a thing or two about humility, independence & discipline.
I believe these qualities are what build characters and it is best to ingrain them into children while they are young.
Children can improve their self-esteem, develop higher emotional intelligence and most importantly... stay out of trouble through sports.
The Roger Rasheed Sports Foundation provides for children from disadvantaged communities access to sports facilities & mentorship programs for a better life pathway.
I am very passionate about this foundation because I owe a lot of my success to the kind coach who selflessly handed me his tennis racquet on that day. Unfortunately, not every kid is as lucky as I am to experience such generosity from a stranger.
I am currently training very hard to be able to run 42.2km to help build New Sports Facilities for these children.
Good news is you don't have to kill yourself running 42.2km to help (LOL). You can still be a Hero like my Tennis Coach and donate whatever you can and know that this will change a kid's life too!
